When jaw surgery enters the conversation
Braces move teeth within the jaws. When the upper and lower jaws themselves do not meet correctly, and growth has finished, moving teeth alone can only compensate so far.
In those cases orthodontic treatment is planned alongside an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Braces position the teeth before surgery, the surgeon repositions the jaw, then braces finish the bite afterwards.
This is a smaller share of cases than the internet suggests. Dr. Cochran will tell you honestly whether your bite genuinely needs a surgical plan, and he has been making that call since 1985.

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Dr. Cochran coordinates the orthodontic phases before and after with them.
How long does surgical treatment take?
Longer than routine braces, because there is a pre-surgical phase, the procedure itself, and a finishing phase. Your surgeon and Dr. Cochran will give you a realistic combined timeline.
