When aligners suit a child, and when they do not

Children are still growing, and a lot of early orthodontic work is about guiding that growth rather than straightening teeth. Expanders, space maintainers and interceptive appliances often come first. See children's orthodontics.

Where a child has enough permanent teeth, a suitable case, and will keep trays in, aligners are a reasonable option. Where they will not, they are an expensive way to make no progress.

The free growth and development evaluation is how we work out which situation you are in.

What this treatment gives you

Free growth evaluation first

Exam, digital scan and X-ray at no charge, so timing is based on evidence.

Honest about wear

Trays need 20 to 22 hours a day. We will tell you if we think that is unrealistic.

Often not the first step

Expanders and interceptive treatment frequently come before any straightening.

Common questions

What age can a child start aligners?

It depends on which teeth are through and how the jaw is developing, not on a birthday. The evaluation answers it.

Is my child too young for orthodontics?

An evaluation around age seven is worthwhile, but most young children are simply monitored. Being told "not yet" is a good outcome.

Are aligners better than braces for children?

Not inherently. For many children fixed braces are more predictable and require no cooperation to work.
