Colour Braces for Teeth
The bands around each bracket are the fun part of metal braces, and you get to change them at every visit.
What the colours actually are
With traditional metal braces, a small elastic ring called a ligature holds the wire into each bracket. Those rings come in a wide range of colours, and they are replaced at every adjustment appointment.
That means your colours are not a one-time decision. Pick school colours in autumn, holiday colours in December, then something quiet before a wedding.
Choosing colours
Change them every visit
Adjustment appointments are typically every few weeks, so you are never stuck with a choice.
Some colours flatter teeth more
Darker blues and purples tend to make teeth look brighter. Yellow, white and clear tend to do the opposite.
Clear and silver exist too
Adults who want metal brackets without the colour usually go clear or silver.

Common questions
Do the coloured bands stain?
They can pick up colour from strongly pigmented food and drink, especially the lighter shades. They are replaced at every visit, so it is short-lived.
Can adults get colours?
Of course. Most choose clear or silver, but nobody is going to stop you picking teal.
Do clear braces have colour bands?
Ceramic braces usually use clear or tooth-coloured ties to keep the whole appliance discreet. See clear braces.
